What made you decide to pursue a career as a therapist?
I have worked in the Social Service sector since 2012 and have had the privilege and opportunity to support people through various roles and organizations. The time spent in these roles lead me to my current career as a therapist in both the public and private sector. I chose to become a therapist because I’ve always had a deep interest in understanding people and their experiences. I’ve seen firsthand how difficult life’s challenges can be, and I wanted to be someone who helps others work through those challenges in a meaningful way. What really drew me to therapy is the idea of creating a space where people feel heard, understood, and supported, no matter what they're going through. It’s a privilege to walk alongside people on their journey toward healing and growth, and knowing I can make a difference in someone's life is what truly drives me.
What do you enjoy most about what you do?
What I enjoy most about being a therapist is witnessing the growth and transformation in my clients. Seeing someone start from a place of struggle and gradually gain more clarity, confidence, and peace is incredibly rewarding. I love being able to support people as they uncover their own strengths and resilience. Every session is unique, and there’s something deeply fulfilling about creating a safe, trusting space where people can be vulnerable and open up. The connection I build with my clients and knowing that I can be a part of their journey toward healing is what makes my work so meaningful.
What do you think are the biggest misconceptions about mental health?
I believe the biggest misconception about mental health is that mental health issues are something you can "just snap out of" or that they’re a sign of personal failure. Just like our physical health, mental and emotional health is something we all have as humans. People often don’t realize that mental health struggles, just like physical health challenges, are complex and influenced by a variety of factors—genetics, environment, life experiences, and even biology. Mental health is something everyone has to take care of, and seeking help or talking about it doesn't make someone weak; it’s actually a sign of strength and self-awareness. It's so important for us to normalize these conversations and acknowledge that mental health is a part of our overall well-being.
What will it be like for clients to work with you as their therapist?
I’m a human before I am a therapist and it’s important to me that I lead with that as a therapist. As such, I try to create a welcoming and safe environment by being authentic, compassionate, and non-judgmental. I believe in meeting clients where they are and respecting their unique experiences, allowing them to feel heard and understood from the very beginning. Working with me means we’ll collaborate as a team, and you’ll have a space to explore your thoughts and emotions at your own pace while being supported to challenge areas of your life or thinking where you are ‘stuck.’ I strive to provide a warm and open atmosphere where vulnerability is met with empathy. One thing I believe in is incorporating a bit of humour when the moment feels right. It can be a great way to relieve tension, build connection, and make the process feel more human and less intimidating. That said, I always prioritize sensitivity to where my clients are emotionally, so humor is used thoughtfully and in a way that aligns with their needs. My goal is to help clients feel empowered, gain insight, and work toward meaningful change in a way that feels right for them.
